 Voyager Estate, established in 1978, is one of Margaret River’s leading estates. Manager of winemaking and viticulture, Steve James, takes a meticulous approach in the organic-in-conversion vineyards and winery, allowing the wines to express a sense of place. Last year, 2012 Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot won Sommelier Wine Awards 2018 Trophy Fine Wine of the Year Award and Gold medal and we are excited to introduce the 2014 to the UK market, which has already received near perfect 98 points from James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion.

 During September, Great Wine Estates will be excited to welcome Steve James from Margaret River to London to launch new labels and vintages of Voyager Estate Wines.

Michael Hall is a prized Barossa Valley based micro-negociant winemaker who also happens to be a British ex-pat. He has Gold for the 2015 Syrah at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show and Best in Show Trophies at Marananga and Adelaide Hills Wine Shows and brings his individual, small batch, single vineyard wines from Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills. Join us at the spectacular Goldsmiths’ Hall for a fascinating 30-minute conversation with jewellery expert Joanna Hardy and trophy-winning winemaker Michael Hall, accompanied by a tasting of Michael Hall wines. These two lifelong friends worked together as jewellery experts in Geneva before Michael pursued his dream to become a winemaker in 2001.

 Joanna Hardy is a Liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Hall, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is a jewellery specialist on the BBC ‘Antiques Roadshow’. Michael Hall has become a renowned, award-winning, micro-negociant winemaker, producing wine from ten small acre vineyards in Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills in Australia. Remembering his background, Michael took the name for his Sang de Pigeon from the colour of the finest Burmese rubies.

 Joanna and Michael will reflect on the significance of place (geology for gemstones and terroir for wine); and the influence of the elements, local culture and meticulousness of the craft on both jewels and wine. The event will include an exclusive en primeur tasting of Michael’s ‘Sang de Pigeon’ and current release Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne, Pinot Noir and Syrah and featuring Joanna’s impressive tome, Ruby: The King of Gems.

Unfailingly meticulous, Michael’s philosophy is to allow the season and site to show themselves. He works closely with the growers to produce outstanding fruit with individual character, free from routine sprays and interventions. This means hand picking, maceration, wild yeasts, lees contact and stirring, barrel maturation and no filtration.

We hope you can visit us in the Grand Hall at Olympia London this July, when we present two of our Australian producers: Voyager Estate from Margaret River and Leogate Estate from Hunter Valley.

VOYAGER ESTATE (est. 1978) is one of Margaret River’s most renowned producers. Sustainable and organic in conversion, its gravel soils, microclimate, maritime influence (‘overall the climate is similar (in terms of warmth) to that of Bordeaux in a dry vintage,’ Halliday) have combined to produce some of the new world’s best chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. Winemaker, Steve James uses only organic inputs, hand picking and sorting, and small batch fermentation and maturation before the final blend. We will pour the range including:

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot (Sommelier Wine Awards 2018 Gold medal and 95 points, Decanter, Sarah Ahmed), 2014 Chardonnay (93 points, Decanter, Sarah Ahmed) and 2016 Girt By Sea Chardonnay (SWA 2018, Silver medal).

LEOGATE ESTATE (past IWC Trophy for Best New Wine and 5-star winery in Halliday’s Wine Companion) is in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, 100-miles north of Sydney. In the 1970s, Len Evans AO OBE, one of the founding fathers of modern Australian wine, planted the vineyard. A blue eucalyptus haze hangs over the Brokenback Range with its ridges’ red volcanic soils sloping into the valley floor’s gravelly sandy loam and limestone, with fossils from the ancient seabed. In 2016, Leogate acquired a high-altitude, certified organic vineyard in the Central Ranges. We will pour the range including:

After a successful pre-release tasting earlier in the month, Great Wine Estates is very pleased to introduce a new, family-owned, sustainable producer Leogate Estate Wines to the United Kingdom, landing on 1 June.

Lynne and David Levin MBE visited the sustainable Hunter Valley estate in early 2018 and were delighted by the complexity of the wines, meticulously crafted at the foot of the Brokenback Ranges, in Australia’s oldest wine producing region.

“I remember walking the rows of the Brokenback Vineyard when it was first planted 40-odd years’ ago by my great friend Len Evans. It is wonderful to see how well those old vines are being looked after today,” David recalled.

The vines were first planted at Leogate in the early 1970s by ‘one of the founding fathers of the modern Australian wine industry’, Len Evans AO OBE. Current custodians, vignerons Bill and Vicki Widin bought the original 50-hectare (123-acre) Brokenback Vineyard in 2008, with Hunter-born head winemaker Mark Woods at the helm since 2010. Mark brings an inherent sensibility for the region’s gorgeous, waxy, lemon-lime acidity of semillon and the graceful, red-berried and spiced shiraz. (See over for wine notes.)

The estate is in the heart of Pokolbin in the Lower Hunter Valley, some 170 kilometres (105 miles) north of Sydney. A blue, eucalyptus haze hangs over the Brokenback Range with its ridges’ red volcanic soils sloping into the gentle undulations of the valley floor, which sits on gravelly sandy loam over clay and limestone, with fossils still visible on the surface from the ancient seabed.

Leogate Estate has been recognised both at home and abroad. The winery has been awarded a 5-Star rating from James Halliday’s 2018 Australian Wine Companion for the seventh year running. It has won the IWC Trophy for Best New Wine and medals at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show and Hong Kong Wine & Spirits Competition. Qantas First & Business class have served the wines over the past four years.

We received an wonderful response from the trade, as well as the private members at Quo Vadis in Soho; especially those who joined us for the winemaker's lunch and dinner, with Voyager Estate Head Winemaker, Steve James.

Steve joined us fresh from the Western Australian #V18 for an intimate vertical tasting from museum wines to current vintages and an exploration of Margaret River’s most important Chardonnay clone, Mendoza. The impressive vertical included:
